It was the 'Perfect Storm' that soon blowed out of control. After the fleet hoisted their spinnakers under storm laden skies in the 1979 Fastnet Race, the race became one of the largest ever rescue operation in peace time. This involved some 4,000 people including the entire Irish Naval Service's fleet, lifeboats, commercial boats, and helicopters. One can almost sense the power of wind billowing out the 60 foot sails of the boats.
