Inspired by the door gods of China, Jonny has reinterpreted the ritual into a limited edition illustration. A door god is a Chinese decorative ritual that sits either side of a doorway to ward off bad spirits. A custom that can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty where the emperor decided to honour two of his most loyal generals by having their portraits painted and hung on his front door. Soon after, ordinary folk joined in with woodblock prints of various other generals, eventually including folklore heroes and mythological figures. The door gods usually come in pairs and can still be found in use today. With a fascination for all things ancient, Jonny has developed a flexible and diverse style working across advertising, editorial and publishing with his digital illustration.
