Jan Zwart was born and raised in the center of Amsterdam, Netherlands. He attended a technical school and specialized in ship’s carpentry. He has lived in the Canary Islands, Spain, the U.S. and in the south of France and worked as a fisherman, banana farmer, service station attendant and fois gras producer.
After travelling extensively in Africa, Asia and South America, he became a professional photographer in 1986.
Since 1992 Jan is a member of the Photographers Association Netherlands (PANL) and since 1998 a member of the Association of Photographers England.
Awards and honours: PANL Kodak Award (4 gold and 5 silver Awards, 9 Merits and 46 nominations). The AOP has honoured his work with 1 silver Award, 1 Merit and 2 nominations.
